About Tennessee Radon Authority
Tennessee Radon Authority is an independent information site about radon in Tennessee. We explain the health risk, how to test and fix radon, and what the rules are in each of Tennessee's 95 counties. We are not a government agency, and we don't sell testing, mitigation or products.
How do we research?
- Primary sources first. Health facts come from EPA, CDC, the World Health Organization and the American Lung Association. Tennessee facts come from the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC), the Tennessee Department of Health and the State Fire Marshal.
- Local codes from the ordinance itself. We read the adopting ordinance or published municipal code for each city and county we report on. The IRC radon appendix applies only where an ordinance specifically adopts it, so we don't assume a city adopted it just because it adopted a newer code edition.
- State data with its limits shown. County test figures come from the Tennessee Department of Health's radon testing dashboard (2022–2023). Those are homes whose owners chose to test, not a random sample. When a figure couldn't be confirmed, we leave it out rather than guess, and we say so on the page.
- Every page lists its sources and the date it was last reviewed.
Do we recommend radon companies?
No. We don't rank, recommend or list individual radon professionals, and we don't accept advertising, sponsorships or referral fees. To find a certified professional, we point you to the national NRPP and NRSB directories. See how to find a certified radon professional.
Is this medical or legal advice?
No. This site is general information. For health questions, talk with your doctor. For a legal question about a home sale or a building permit, contact a Tennessee attorney or your local building department.
How do we handle corrections?
Building codes change and state data gets updated, so we review county pages regularly and date every review. If you find an error, such as a city that has adopted a new code, email us at info@tennesseeradonauthority.com with a link to the source, and we'll check it and update the page.
